Rancilio Silvia in real life

Can I make my morning espresso, with Rancilio, without too much hassle?

Many of us want an espresso, or cafe latte, in the morning before we meet the day. And let’s face it – the time, from we leave the warm bed, in the morning, and until we leave the house, is not the best time for laborious procedures, waiting time and experiments.

Friends of mine have been scared by the numerous, quite complicated, on-line guides about the Rancilio Silvia. It is attractive to have a high quality espresso machine, as the Rancilio Silvia; on the other hand: our everyday life has to work without too much hassle.

My 2008 Rancilio Silvia model does it quite well in the morning after circa 5 minutes warming time – the only thing to remember is to brew imidiately after the indicator lamp turns off, to ensure a high brewing temperature.

What you do in the morning

The quickest procedure – 6 minutes
  1. Turn on the Rancilio Silvia
  2. Put some hot tap water into your espresso cup, for preheating the cup
  3. Prepare the beans, put them in the portafilter and tamp it
  4. Put on the portafilter
  5. Wait until the indicator lamp turns off (max 5 mins after the machine was turned on)
  6. Dry the espresso cup, and brew the espresso immediately.
The next quickest procedure – 9-10 minutes
  1. Turn on the rancilio Silvia
  2. Put some hot tap water into your espresso cup, for preheating the cup
  3. Prepare the beans, put them in the portafilter and tamp it
  4. Wait until the indicator lamp turns off (max 5 mins after the machine was turned on)
  5. Put an empty glass or container under the place, where you later put on the portafilter, and press the espresso button shortly. Hot clear water will pour into the glass – cover the bottom with 1-2 cm (1 inch). It will clean the machine for residues of beans from last time, you used the machine
  6. Wait a bit, and repeat, until the indicator lamp turns on
  7. Put on the portafilter
  8. Wait until the indicator lamp turns off
  9. Dry the espresso cup and brew the espresso immediately
3 minutes more and you have cafe latte

If you want to make cafe latte, you have to heat the water in the machine further, before you can steam the milk. The ekstra heating takes maximum 1½ minut. So if you make cafe latte, you have to ad 2 – 3 minutes to the above.

They offer a variety of beans. I have brewed some fantastic espressos from their Blackburn and Ngunguru beans, and they both surprised with fantastic rich coffee tastes. Tastes different from what I have experienced before.

These people know what they are doing.
